  Cara Martin, Associate Executive Director

As Associate Executive Director of Center for Student Opportunity, Cara Martin oversees the spectrum of CSO programs, with a focus on college partnerships, and manages program staff and business operations in the Bethesda office.

Before joining Center for Student Opportunity, Martin was the Executive Director of Starlight Children’s Foundation – MidAtlantic, a nonprofit organization helping seriously ill children and their families cope with their pain, fear and isolation through entertainment, education and family activities. She began as an intern with the organization and during her nine year tenure the organization saw tremendous growth in programs, quadrupled staff, and more than tripled the budget to take it past the million dollar mark.

During her college years, her interest in the nonprofit sector was set in motion through her active involvement as a volunteer with Project Phoenix, a program providing William and Mary students the opportunity to impact the lives of middle school youth who are not currently achieving academically and/or socially. Each week she tutored at a Williamsburg-James City County middle school and then led an educational program, which was conceived, organized and facilitated by her and fellow volunteers. She also helped organize weekly Saturday programs in such areas as Career Exploration, Civic Responsibility, Culture/Education, Life Skills and Health and Fitness.

Martin hails from Bethesda, Maryland, and Glenside, Pennsylvania, just outside of Philadelphia. She is a graduate of the College of William and Mary where she earned her B.A. in International Studies, minored in Italian and spent a summer abroad studying in Florence. At William and Mary, she was awarded the Benjamin Stoddert Ewell Award for outstanding leadership and service on campus and in the community, participated in several leadership programs, and was a member of the service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega. Martin is also a graduate of Georgetown University’s Nonprofit Management Executive Program through the Center for Public and Nonprofit Leadership. She currently resides in Kensington, Maryland, with her husband and two dogs, Gibbs and Sonny.
