Baltimore College Exploration Evening a Success
Baltimore, MD – November 17 – Center for Student Opportunity joined the Baltimore, Maryland Mayor’s Office of Employment Development and the Youth Opportunity System to sponsor a college exploration evening for Baltimore students and families. The program, led by Bonnie Sudduth, director of A College Choice, an independent educational services practice, was an extension of a college counseling volunteer effort with Ms. Sudduth and students at the Academy for College and Career Exploration (ACCE). The collaborative event served students and parents from ACCE, and two Mayor’s office initiatives, YO! Baltimore and FUTURES.

The event, held at ACCE, kicked off with a keynote address from CSO’s Executive Director, Matt Rubinoff, and followed with a series of four workshops covering testing, college applications, and financial aid planning. Ms Sudduth’s presentation discussed the “Top 10 Things Colleges Are Looking For.” Sharif Small, a certified financial planning specialist offered a talk of “Financial Aid Basics,” and Gregory Peel, president and founder of The Athletic Group, spoke on “Marketing Yourself as a Student Athletes.” ACCE’s guidance counselor, Jennifer Reed, led the fourth workshop on “PSAT Basics.” Parents and students, primarily of 9th and 10th grade age, were sure to benefit from an early start on the college process.

The evening generated such a buzz that it was covered by Baltimore’s ABC affiliate, WMAR-TV, for its nightly newscast.

Center for Student Opportunity’s Counseling Outreach initiative solicits volunteer support from college counselors across to the country to offer their pro bono services to under-resourced schools or community youth organizations in their area in an effort to increase college preparation and guidance services reaching first-generation and other historically underserved student populations.
