Carter G. Woodson Open House Weekend
In honor of alumnus Carter G. Woodson, “father of Black History,” Berea College and the Center for Student Opportunity have partnered to present the annual Woodson Open House for current African American high school seniors and the Woodson Enduring Legacy Award for outstanding African American high school juniors.
For Seniors
African American high school seniors are invited to attend the annual Carter G. Woodson Open House Weekend, February 16-18, 2007. The program provides students an introduction to the rich tradition of Berea College in serving African American and other students of limited financial resources—all Berea students receive a 4-year, tuition scholarship and a paid, on-campus job.
Students interested in attending should complete the online form here by January 8. Attending students should come from financial circumstances that would traditionally pose a significant challenge to their college bound aspirations. Limited space is available. Bus transportation is provided from Greenville, SC, Birmingham, AL, Cincinnati, OH, and Louisville, KY. Limited transportation assistance is available for some students traveling from other areas. |
For Juniors
Berea College is recognizing promising African American high school juniors with the Woodson Enduring Legacy Award, to be presented to students during the Unity Banquet held February 17 as part of the Woodson Open House Weekend. Students selected for the award will be able to visit the historic Berea College campus, participate in events focused on college admission and financial aid/scholarships, learn about the unique interracial history of Berea College, in addition to receiving the award.
To be eligible for the award, students should be African-American, juniors in high school, come from a family whose financial circumstances would pose a significant challenge to their college bound aspirations, be actively involved in community, school, civic, and/or church organizations, and have at least a 3.2 cumulative high school GPA.
Do you know an African-American high school junior who has demonstrated outstanding leadership, academic promise, and character in spite of their financial circumstances? If so - please nominate them for the Carter G. Woodson Enduring Legacy Award by completing the online form here by January 8. |

| Berea College, the first interracial, coeducational college in the South, has a long history of welcoming “all people of the earth” to our campus. Recognized for the past 3 years by US News and World Report as the #1 Comprehensive College in the South for a Bachelor’s degree, Berea’s academic and co-curricular programs are of the highest quality. Perhaps most incredibly, though, is Berea’s policy of providing all students with a 4-year, tuition scholarship and a paid, on-campus job. |
